The Chinese Calendars

Updated: Nov 2, 2022

The Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) Feng Shui System, oftentimes mentioned in English books of feng shui, might be the simplest technique to learn but there are many complex parts to it.  The Life Gua (Ming Gua) Method is perhaps the easiest, which uses your date of birth as the starting point.  From this, your Ming Gua or Life Gua is determined along with your favourable and unfavourable compass directions and locations.

A common mistake by beginners is to use the Chinese lunar calendar instead of the Chinese solar calendar for their feng shui calculations. Why use the solar calendar instead of the lunar calendar to mark the beginning of the year?

While Chinese New Year traditionally marks the change in animal sign, serious practitioners and scholars of feng shui and the Four Pillars of Destiny consider the beginning of spring as the New Year. Feng Shui uses the solar calendar which is based on the 24 qi seasons that synchronizes and which usually falls on February 4 in the Western Gregorian calendar, but can also be on the 3rd or 5th of February. The solar calendar is based on the position of the sun while the lunar calendar is based on the moon.

People born on the third, fourth, or fifth day of February, have to look at the hour of their birth to accurately determine their Chinese birth year.

As 2016 approaches, I would like to take this time to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous Year of the Fire Monkey!
